Description

1897-S Dollar, MS67
An Important Condition Rarity

1897-S $1 MS67 PCGS. Beginning with distributions from the San Francisco Mint in the 1920s, the 1897-S has been treated as a common date in the Morgan dollar series. This is an assessment that still holds true today, but only for coins in circulated and lower Mint State grades. Survivors that grade as high as MS67 number only 39 pieces at the major grading services, and there are just two examples finer (6/18). Both sides are nearly untoned with reflective glimmers in the fields. The design features are sharply struck, and they are free of readily evident abrasions with luster that provides a semiprooflike sheen as the coin turns under the light.
Ex: Palm Beach Signature (Heritage, 3/2006), lot 1241; Dallas Signature (Heritage, 11/2006), lot 1462, which realized $5,462.50.
