Description

1846 Dollar, MS64
Very Scarce in This Grade

1846 $1 MS64 NGC. Repunched 1, OC-1. Osburn-Cushing Die State g/f. Mottled golden-olive and russet patina embraces each side of this attractive near-Gem example. Trivial softness occurs on stars 4 and 5 and on a few of the eagle's neck feathers, while the other design elements are crisply rendered. Marks are virtually unseen without magnification. An array of die cracks traverse the top of the reverse legend, with a heavy crack across the rim to STA of STATES with the beginnings of a retained cud between D and ST. Such advanced die cracks are seldom seen on Seated dollars, which normally have lesser mintages. On the obverse, faint die cracks remain among the right-hand stars despite die polishing. The 1 in the date is repunched at the top, barely visible on this Choice, late die state coin. Census: 22 in 64 (1 in 64+), 3 finer (5/16).
