Description

1870-CC Silver Dollar, AU55
First-Year Carson City Scarcity

1870-CC $1 AU55 PCGS. OC-1, R.4. Osburn-Cushing Die State a/a. The date sits slightly high in the obverse exergue, and the Large CC mintmark is widely spaced compared to the other reverses. Nine die pairs were used to strike just 12,462 1870-CC dollars. A series of tiny die lines on the portrait (including an upcurved one in the unfinished area beneath Liberty's chin) confirm the OC-1 obverse. A spike from the dentil beneath L in DOL. identifies the reverse. This example is semiprooflike throughout both sides with some delicate lines throughout the fields. Mottled gold and lilac toning joins soft mint luster throughout both sides. The obverse strike is a bit subdued as usually seen on this first-year dollar, the most readily available date among the four CC issues in the series. Still, a Choice, scarce coin in unceasingly strong demand among Seated dollar specialists. Population: 36 in 55, 32 finer (5/16).(Registry values: N2998)
