Description

1798 B-6, BB-96 Bust Dollar, AU55
Possible Condition Census Example

1798 $1 Large Eagle, Knob 9, 5 Vertical Lines, 10 Arrows, B-6, BB-96, R.3, AU55 PCGS. Ex: Freedom Collection. Bowers Die State IV with a short crack over the I in AMERICA. The obverse die with the Knob 9 and 1 that touches curl was also used on BB-95, and the reverse die with the 5 Vertical Lines was also used on BB-101. While the 2013 notable specimens list records five Mint State examples, three of those pre-date the start of third party certification in 1986. The present Choice AU example is likely at the low end of the Condition Census that Bowers records as 63, 61, 60, 55, 53, and 50. A nicely detailed example, this piece has vibrant gold surfaces with splashes of sky-blue toning. The strike is well-centered, and the coin has beautiful eye appeal. This superb specimen would make a wonderful type coin, or as a great example of the B-6, BB-96 variety.
Ex: Dr. Robert Hesselgesser Collection (Goldberg Auctions, 6/2011), lot 885; Eric Lane Collection, Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 2/2024), lot 3088.
