Description

1946 Gold U.N. Monetary Pattern, MS62
HK-873, Proposed International Coinage

1946 U.N. Monetary Pattern in Gold MS62 NGC. HK-873. 37 mm, .900 fineness. Dies by Karl Gruppe. Struck by Medallic Art Company under the direction of famed numismatists Abe Kosoff and Hans Schulman to convey their concept of an international currency, one year after the formation of the United Nations. Although issued in eleven different compositions, only 314 single-thickness gold patterns were produced. Double, triple, and quadruple-thickness gold pieces were also struck, but in quantities of four each. The current example displays full prooflike brilliance, however the presence of a few light hairlines and fingerprint remnants on the reverse limit this piece to the assigned grade.
