Description

1882 Shield Nickel, PR67+ Deep Cameo
Pristine, As-Struck Surfaces

1882 5C PR67+ Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC. The 1882 proof Shield nickels were struck in the generous amount of 3,100 examples for the minor proof sets, but precious few survive with preservation anywhere near so fine as this PR67+ Deep Cameo PCGS example. PCGS reports only two at the PR67 Deep Cameo level, with this sole example finest by the Plus margin (6/15). Deeply contrasted surfaces feature thick mint frost on all devices complemented brilliantly mirrored fields. This well-defined coin is essentially as struck, and a small raised "pimple" on the left side of the rightmost set of vertical shield lines may aid in pedigree tracking.

This is the "third die" in Breen's Proof Encyclopedia, showing a filled 2 and filled lower half of the second 8. Breen writes, "The filled 2 coins, unc. and proofs, have been repeatedly offered as '1883' in error (the 1883 date is much wider) and sometimes as '1882/1.' The roughness within the 2 is large enough to conceal a 1 and the spacing is approximately as in 1881; but no definite traces show even at 90x stereo magnification."(Registry values: P1)
