Description

1908 Indian Quarter Eagle, MS66
Exemplary First-Year Type Coin

1908 $2 1/2 MS66 PCGS. Ex: The Shrike Set. Not the example offered in our September 2011 auction containing The Shrike Set of $2 1/2 Indians, but from the same source and clearly a coin chosen with the same care as that collection's first-year Premium Gem. The 1908 was saved in quantity for its novelty value, though few coins have survived so well as this MS66 piece. Gold-orange interiors have a peach overtone that fades out toward the lighter centers. Each side is well-detailed, and only a few tiny luster grazes and other small disturbances preclude an even finer technical designation. PCGS has certified only two Superb Gems finer (5/16).
