1794 V-4, LM-4 Half Dime, MS65+
Struck in 1795
The Eliasberg Coin

1794 H10C V-4, LM-4, R.4, MS65+ PCGS. CAC. In all grades, PCGS and NGC have certified 350 1794 half dimes and 1,016 1795 half dimes. That relationship is important, as it estimates the ratio of surviving examples of the two dates. Almost exactly one-fourth of certified Flowing Hair half dimes are dated 1794. If the two dates survived at the same rate, a likely assumption, then the original mintage of 1794 half dimes was one-fourth the total.

Many years ago, Walter Breen suggested that the 7,756 half dimes delivered on March 30, 1795 were dated 1794, and that all later deliveries were dated 1795. However, die state evidence suggests that examples of the present variety, LM-4, were struck after examples of 1795 LM-1 and LM-2. Therefore, it is impossible to state anything beyond the fact that all 1794 half dimes were struck in 1795. It is likely that the production of 1794 half dimes was slightly more than 20,000 coins.

This example has a prominent obverse die crack from the rim to star 2, curl 4, Liberty's cheek, nose, the right obverse field, and star 10 to the rim. The reverse exhibits two of the three die cracks mentioned in the Logan-McCloskey reference. The die state of this example is later than 1795 LM-1 that shares the same reverse, and equivalent to 1795 LM-2, also from the same reverse. Since those two 1795 varieties are quite rare, they were struck in limited quantities, leading us to speculate that the present example was probably from the delivery of June 12, 1795, or possibly from the July 30 delivery. Breen's hope of correlating die marriages with delivery figures has proven impossible, although certain generalizations may be made.

This impressive Gem 1794 half dime features a bold strike, showing sharply delineated hair detail, strong wing definition, and even some of the eagle's breast feathers. The surfaces are pristine with frosty luster beneath golden-brown toning on the obverse and sea-green toning on the reverse. Population: 9 in 65 (2 in 65+), 1 finer (6/16).
