Description

1806 Capped Bust Right Five, BD-1, MS63
Only Three Finer Coins at PCGS

1806 $5 Pointed 6, 8x5 Stars, BD-1, R.4, MS63 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/f. The Philadelphia Mint struck 64,093 Capped Bust Left half eagles in 1806, with six known die varieties for the date. This coin represents the BD-1 variety, with stars 1 and 2 nearly touching and broken T's in the reverse legend. Die cracks connect most of the obverse stars and a cud has formed on the reverse rim above the last S in STATES, indicating the late die state. The BD-1 has a surviving population of 100-150 examples in all grades.

This impressive Select specimen exhibits well-detailed design elements and pleasing orange-gold surfaces with some scattered minor contact marks on both sides. A few faint planchet adjustment marks can be detected on the bust with magnification. Hints of original satiny mint luster add to the considerable eye appeal. Population: 13 in 63, 3 finer (5/16).
