Description

1888 Three Dollar, MS62
Older Holder, Prooflike Fields

1888 $3 MS62 PCGS. The penultimate three dollar issue has a proof mintage of 291 pieces and a business production of only 5,000 pieces. Many coins struck from commerce exhibit prooflike surfaces, which makes it important to distinguish proofs from business strikes. Proofs display die lumps near the top of Liberty's neck, while business strikes exhibit die doubling on UNITED. The present coin was struck from proof dies, and the lemon-gold surfaces are noticeably prooflike. But the strike shows blending on the high points, particularly the shoulder curl, characteristic of a business impression. Also, the fields are not dappled, as seen on proofs. Light hairlines determine the grade. Housed in an old green label holder.
