Description

1879-O Dollar, MS66
One of The Finest Coins Extant

1879-O $1 MS66 NGC. In the fifth edition of his Guide Book of Morgan Silver Dollars (2016), Dave Bowers estimates 220,000 to 350,000 1879-O dollars survive in MS60 to MS62 condition, another 15,000 to 25,000 in MS63, and 5,000 to 8,000 in MS64. The population dwindles to 450 to 700 pieces at the Gem grade level, and the issue becomes conditionally rare in MS66. Probably no more than 25 to 30 such pieces exist. Consequently, we expect to see spirited bidding from Registry Set participants and other advanced collectors of this ever-popular series.

Both sides are almost completely brilliant. The only exception are two arcs of golden color near E PLU and below ONE. Satin mint luster glistens over well-struck devices, qualities that, unlike most other New Orleans products, are often found on 1879-O dollars. Uncharacteristic is the lack of bagmarks. There are just a couple of superficial luster grazes in the left obverse field and some minor chatter above IN GOD. Census: 7 in 66, 0 finer (1/18).
