Description
1878-S Double Eagle, Semiprooflike MS62
Conditionally Rare San Francisco Issue
1878-S $20 MS62 NGC. Despite a mintage of 1.7 million coins,
the 1878-S is challenging in Mint State. A number of MS61 and MS62
coins have been repatriated from overseas holdings in the past
three decades, but anything finer is extremely rare. Each side
features a degree of semiprooflikeness, indicative of an early
impression from the dies. The hair curls are sharp, as are the
upper stars and the central reverse. A marvelous Uncirculated
example with rich yellow-gold color and luminous luster. Census: 91
in 62 (1 in 62+), 7 finer (5/16).(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26B5, PCGS# 8987, Greysheet# 9929)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
