1849 Norris, Gregg & Norris Half Eagle
XF Details
Reeded Edge, No Period after ALLOY, K-3

1849 $5 Norris, Gregg & Norris Five Dollar, Reeded Edge -- Repaired -- PCGS Genuine. XF Details. K-3, High R.6. The partnership of Norris, Gregg & Norris was founded in New York City and relocated to the San Francisco area in 1849 following the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill. The firm began issuing private gold coinage shortly after arriving, and while they produced large quantities of the half eagle, the exact mintage is not known. This piece is the K-3 variety, with a reeded edge and no period after ALLOY. A Guide Book issue, K-3 is the rarest of the four 1849 varieties. A small gouge at the A in FRANCISCO serves as a pedigree marker, while the fields throughout each side exhibit careful tooling to repair other abrasions. Surface marks are otherwise inoffensive. Listed on page 410 of the 2025 Guide Book.
