Description

1801 O-101 Half Dollar, AU50
Partially Prooflike, Much Mint Luster Remains

1801 50C O-101, T-2, R.3, AU50 PCGS. Reflective fields and considerable remaining mint luster join natural copper-gold toning with bluish-gray overtones on this sharp and attractive Draped Bust half. Two die pairs combined to strike just 30,289 pieces of the important early series date. Two die marriages share the same obverse, leaving the reverse die to define the O-101 (T-2) and O-102 (T-1) varieties. O-101 shows AM of AMERICA joined at the base, with the first A close but not touching a wing feather. Die rust is prominent in the left reverse field.

Both the 1801 and 1802 halves were struck in similar quantities and they share a similar cachet for series specialists. Each date always commands substantial collector demand and both issues are notably scarce in About Uncirculated and finer grades. This 1801 is housed in an old green label holder with high quality surfaces and sharp hair definition on Liberty's hair strands. A short scrape near the curls above star 2 and another above the 8 in the date are the only marks of note. The reverse field stars show the usual incompleteness, yet this original half exudes eye appeal and the vibrant surfaces are suggestive of an even finer grade. Population (both varieties): 5 in 50, 11 finer (6/16).
