Description

1894-S Barber Half Dollar, MS66
Ex: Clapp, Eliasberg, Hugon

1894-S 50C MS66 PCGS Secure. Ex: Shireman / Eliasberg. With a mintage in excess of 4 million coins, the 1894-S is a moderately available issue through lower Uncirculated condition. The landscape changes dramatically above the MS64 level, where just a handful of MS65 and better coins are known. This is unquestionably one of the finest examples extant. Semiprooflike surfaces showcase original golden, lilac, and rose patina with the trace of a partial fingerprint on the lower obverse. Sharply defined throughout. Population: 4 in 66, 1 finer (11/15).
Ex: Purchased directly from the San Francisco Mint by J. M. Clapp (11/1894); John H. Clapp; Clapp Estate, to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. (1942 via Stack's); Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection (Bowers and Merena, 4/1997), lot 2027; John C. Hugon Collection / FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2005), lot 44207; ANA Signature (Heritage, 7/2005), lot 10215; Harry Laibstain (2/10/2006).
