1925 Norse American Centennial Medal, MS63
Triple-Silvered Bronze

1925 Medal Norse Medal, Large Format, Silvered, MS63 NGC. The large format Norse-American Centennial medals were struck in bronze. Anthony Swiatek reports that all these large format medals were plated afterward:

"For reasons known only to the Congressman [Kvale], it appears that all of the medals were silver triple-plated outside the Mint by a private firm in the nation's capital, perhaps because he felt silver looked more prestigious than bronze."

Various sources indicate that the production of the large format bronze medals, later silver-plated, ranged between 50 and 75 pieces. Most observers today agree that 60 of these large format medals were distributed, and they rarely appear in the present numismatic marketplace. We know of just 28 auction appearances during the last quarter century. Traces of underlying bronze are noted on the high points of this bright silver example that exhibits satin surfaces and excellent eye appeal.
