Description

1853-C Gold Dollar, MS62
Challenging Charlotte Issue

1853-C G$1 MS62 NGC. Variety 1. With a mintage of only 11,515 pieces, 1853-C gold dollars were not saved by the public, nor were they numismatically preserved. Nearly all survivors are circulated. Doug Winter estimates only 15 to 25 Uncirculated pieces exist (other estimates range upward to 50 Mint State coins), with most pieces at the low end of the Uncirculated scale. This lustrous and attractive MS62 example displays pleasing greenish-gold color and is surprisingly well-produced for the issue. Finely granular surfaces show the expected weakness on the mid-to-lower reverse, where strike doubling is visible on the mintmark and CA of AMERICA. Census: 12 in 62 (2 in 62+), 18 finer (1/18).(Registry values: N4719)
