Description

1860-S Dime, MS61
Rare in Mint State

1860-S 10C MS61 PCGS. The 1860-S dime holds an interesting place in the history of Seated dime coinage. When the new Legend Obverse design was adopted, the distance between Philadelphia and San Francisco took so long to cover, it was not possible for the Western mint to receive the new dies during calendar year 1860. As a result, the San Francisco Mint used obverse dies left over from late 1859 and reverses from 1858. Limited numbers of high-grade examples survive of this issue. This example is lustrous and lightly toned, with some wispy die polish lines (as struck) evident in the obverse and reverse fields. Population: 1 in 61, 12 finer (2/14).
