Description

1867 Rays Nickel, MS66
High-Grade Rarity

1867 5C Rays MS66 PCGS. An extremely low population is recorded for high-grade examples of the 1867 Rays Shield nickel, with only four PCGS certified examples graded MS66, and just one finer MS67 specimen (3/13). Its high-grade rarity is unrecognized with most collectors due to substantial populations in lower grades. Pieces grading Gem or finer are clearly underrated in today's numismatic marketplace. This example will also appeal to die state aficionados for its shattered obverse die and cracked reverse die. A bold strike results in virtually complete details on both sides, with frosty light gray luster beneath delicate champagne toning. This piece has countless positive attributes.(Registry values: N4719)
