Description

1896 Nickel, MS66
None Certified Finer

1896 5C MS66 PCGS. The 1896 Liberty nickel has long been one of the underrated dates in the circulation strike series. In all Mint State grades, the PCGS population of the 1896 is the third lowest of the series behind the key 1885 and 1886 issues. With only nine examples in MS66 and none finer (3/13), the 1896 is the second rarest high-grade issue behind the six coin PCGS population of 1886. This remarkable specimen exhibits brilliant and frosty nickel-gray luster with pristine surfaces and bold design details. A few stars are flat and the left ear of corn is merely outlined, as on nearly every known example of this issue. This is a remarkable Premium Gem specimen for the connoisseur.(Registry values: N2998)
