1895 $10 PR64 Cameo NGC. The 1895 proof eagle is a monumental rarity by any measure. The Mint struck 56 examples, a production number in keeping with other issues from the period. Walter Breen wrote in his 1989 Proof Encyclopedia: "Date begins low, slants up to r., left base of 1 left of center; polish at IB, Y and eye; floating curls behind neck. Under 30 survive, possibly under 25." Nearly 30 years later, Breen's total seems fairly accurate. PCGS estimates 30 to 40 survivors, while the combined totals at NGC and PCGS show 44 grading events, including an unknown number of resubmissions and crossovers.

This marvelous Choice proof has profound Cameo contrast between thickly frosted design elements and watery, jet-black fields. The devices are fully struck, as expected but not always found. A couple of minuscule contact marks on the neck and in the field under the eagle's left (facing) wing act as pedigree identifiers. Census: 7 in 64 Cameo, 4 finer (6/17).
