Description

1800 BD-1 Eagle, AU50
Low Official Mintage of 5,999 Coins
Produced in 1801

1800 $10 BD-1, High R.3, AU50 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/e. A die crack through the top of LIBERTY and clashed dentils over STAT are characteristic of the later die state for this, the only variety known for the 1800 ten dollar gold piece. That only one set of dies was employed is unsurprising. Just 5,999 coins were manufactured, according to official records. In reality, an unknown number of coins, including this one, were produced in 1801 after the first obverse die for that year failed. Thereafter, Mint officials reused the 1800 obverse until a new 1801 obverse was finished. That explains the issue's relative availability compared to other early eagles.

The stars are flattened, but Liberty's portrait exhibits good detail with continued delineation of the hair strands. The eagle's wing and neck feathers are clear, but the shield is somewhat soft. Adjustment marks occur around the reverse border on this pale red-gold representative.
