Description

1826/'5' Quarter Eagle, BD-1, AU58
Remarkable Eye Appeal and Sharpness
Rare in Any Grade

1826/'5' $2 1/2 BD-1, High R.5, AU58 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b, clashed, as was the Bass Core Collection coin. This is the only variety of the 1826 quarter eagle, and it is rare with only 30 to 35 pieces known. The combined PCGS and NGC certified population is only 26 pieces, including possible resubmissions at the AU58 level. Uncirculated examples are extremely rare, with only three reported -- all at PCGS (6/16). The present near-Mint example is remarkably sharp from the rims to the central devices. Some original reflectivity in the fields accentuates the straw-gold patina, and a few touches of violet are seen on the highest points of the devices. There is no obvious wear, although light chatter can be seen in the fields. Eye appeal is remarkable for the issue and grade.

This issue has in the past been referenced as an 1826/5 overdate, but it is now thought to just be a recut 6 in the date. The Guide Book lists it as 1826/6, and NGC and the Bass-Dannreuther reference share this opinion. PCGS takes a more neutral stance, labeling it 1826/'5'. The Guide Book mintage of 760 coins may be slightly low, as it is probably that some of the early 1827 quarter eagle production was produced with this die pair. Still, the issue's rarity is undeniable. Population: 4 in 58, 3 finer (6/16).
