Description

1869 Ten Dollar, AU55
Significant Die Polish Remains

1869 $10 AU55 NGC. When the 1869 ten dollar was struck, and continuing until 1878, gold coins did not circulate in the East or Midwest. This explains the Mint's reluctance to strike substantial numbers of lower-denomination gold coins. Only eight to 12 1869 tens are believed known today in mint condition, with an additional 80 to 100 pieces estimated extant in circulated grades. This briefly handled coin retains much of the initial polish surrounding the devices on each side. Deep, even reddish-gold color covers the surfaces.
