Description
Extraordinary Superb Cameo Proof 1879 Dollar
1879 $1 PR67 Cameo NGC. There is some difference of opinion about the actual number of proofs produced in 1879. Mint records indicate 1,100 pieces were struck, but Breen differs with this figure suggesting that just 650 proofs were produced: 250 struck in the first quarter, 500 in the second, for a total of 750, 100 of which were melted as unsold. His research led him to believe that 450 leftover 1878s were counted in with the Mint figure as they were on hand in January, 1879. Bowers, on the other hand, believes that fewer than 1,100 proofs may have been struck, but more than the 650 figure. In either case, there are very few proofs of this year that are as well preserved as this example. Brilliant throughout, the fields show unfathomable depth of reflectivity and there is a lovely dusting of snow-white mint frost over the devices, which produces a stark cameo contrast on each side.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 27Z3, PCGS# 87314, Greysheet# 7794)
