Description

1890 Quarter Eagle, PR64+ Deep Cameo
Scarce in Contrasted Proof Format

1890 $2 1/2 JD-1, R.5, PR64+ Deep Cameo PCGS. The 1890 proof quarter eagle has a fairly high survival rate, but it is still a rare issue in all grades. From a proof mintage of 93 pieces, John Dannreuther estimates that as few as 35 to 45 proofs survive in all grades. Deep Cameos comprise only a small portion of total population. This high-end Choice example is one of just two Deep Cameo specimens certified by PCGS , with this piece being tied with one other PR64+ coin and 15 pieces numerically finer (10/24). The sharp, frosty devices provide excellent contrast with the deeply mirrored fields, while both sides exhibit rich reddish-orange patina. A few faint hairlines in the fields preclude a full Gem grade assessment. PCGS Population: 3 in 64 (2 in 64+) Deep Cameo, 15 finer (7/25).
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 1-2 2015), lot 3246.
