Description

1652 Large Planchet Pine Tree Shilling
Very Rare Noe-6.1, XF40

1652 SHILNG Pine Tree Shilling, Large Planchet XF40 PCGS. Noe-6.1, W-720, Salmon 5-Di, R.7. 69.91 gn. No pellets at trunk. First described by Richard Picker, Noe-6.1 is a very rare variant of Noe-6 distinguished by Boston Mint re-engraving of the letters IN M on the lower obverse. In particular, the I is short and sans serif with a pointed end. A different example of Noe-6.1 appears in lot 110 of the Hain Family Collection (Stack's, 1/2002), where it is stated "we have not recorded another." The die state is later than Noe-6 with prominent breaks on the reverse above the 6 in the date and through the M in DOM. The deep lavender-brown surfaces are wavy due to rocker press manufacture. Listed on page 39 of the 2013 Guide Book.

Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 23, Greysheet# 9)
