Description

1804 Half Eagle, AU58
Scarce BD-3 Small 8, Recut 4 Variety

1804 $5 Small 8, BD-3, R.5, AU58 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/i. The BD-3 variety ranges from scarce to rare depending on the point of reference. Compared to other 1804 varieties it is merely scarce, with several other 1804 varieties (BD-4 through BD-6) much scarcer. John Dannreuther's BD-3 survival estimate is 40 to 50 pieces known. This variety features a Normal ("Small") 8 in the date accompanied by a widely recut Normal 4. The recutting appears as a prominent line far below the base of 4. A die crack from star 10 to Liberty's mouth characterizes the advanced die state as does a second crack through the left side of 8 into the drapery. The lapped reverse is rotated about 45° counterclockwise in relation to the obverse. As expected, the reverse -- inherited from 1804 BD-2 -- shows a lengthy die crack through E in AMERICA across the shield, emerging from the left (facing) wingtip to the edge. Lightly abraded green-gold surfaces are sharply struck and mostly lustrous. Partially reflective fields provide extra eye appeal, which is strong for the near-Mint grade.
