First S-Mint Saint-Gaudens Issue

1908-S $20 MS62 PCGS Secure. Dies for Saint-Gaudens' new double eagle design were not distributed to the branch mints until 1908, and San Francisco was the last to receive them. However, production of the new coins was delayed. In Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles, Roger Burdette writes that blueprints for a new toggle collar -- necessary to strike the raised edge devices on Saint-Gaudens' double eagle without sheering them off upon ejection from the press -- were sent to the San Francisco Mint in March 1908, but the West Coast mint's presses did not have adequate clearance for the new mechanism to operate. In addition to this delay, striking problems related to the new dies plagued the San Francisco Mint. Acceptable examples of the new coins were not produced until early August 1908. Just 22,000 pieces were struck for the calendar year.

This is a satiny Mint State survivor, showing warm peach-gold luster and well-struck devices. Grade-limiting abrasions on each side do not overly detract. Eye appeal is pleasing for the grade.(Registry values: N4719)
