1891 $5 PR65 ★ Ultra Cameo NGC. The reported mintages of the 1890 and 1891 half eagles are given as 88 proof strikes of the 1890 versus only 53 of the 1891, so it is unsurprising that the 1891 proofs appear to have considerably lower certified populations. PCGS estimates that 35 to 50 survive of the 1890, compared to 30 to 40 examples for 1891. PCGS reports 19 graded of the 1890 versus 18 of the 1891, while NGC shows 29 of the 1890 and 17 of the 1891 -- in all, 48 submitted at both services for 1890, and only 35 of the 1891.

The present PR65 ★ Ultra Cameo example of the 1891 is the sole Star-designated coin in this grade at NGC, although two others are graded straight PR65 Ultra Cameo. There are five Ultra Cameos finer at NGC and two Deep Cameos finer at PCGS (6/15). One glance at this piece reveals its outstanding feature, the profound gold-on-black contrast between mirrored fields and lavishly frosted devices. The Star designation is well-deserved. A small straight contact in the lower-left obverse field and a couple of faint toning streaks before Liberty's profile are seemingly all that precludes an even finer grade.(Registry values: P3)
