Description

1904 Liberty Half Eagle, PR63 Cameo
Unusually Frosty Example, Ex: Trompeter

1904 $5 PR63 Cameo NGC. CAC. Only 136 proof Liberty half eagles were struck in 1904, a smaller mintage than those of the previous four years. As might be expected, this date is seen infrequently and Walter Breen called the 1904 a "sleeper" in the proof gold series. The surviving population probably numbers around 50 specimens in collectible grades, possibly as many as 75 examples if impaired pieces and coins in institutional collections are included. Few examples are seen with cameo contrast, as the Mint was using an all-brilliant finish on proof coins in this time period.

The present coin is an attractive Select example with an unusual amount of mint frost on the sharply detailed design elements. Accordingly, the devices contrast boldly with the deeply reflective fields. The date is positioned low and to the left, and a few hollows appear in the left (facing) wing, due to die polishing. A few minor hairlines are the only grade-limiting factors. Visual appeal is quite strong. Census: 3 in 63 Cameo, 33 finer (5/15).
