Description

1877 Liberty Twenty, MS63
First Type Three Issue

1877 $20 MS63 PCGS. The reverse of the double eagle was modified in 1877, with the denomination spelled out as TWENTY DOLLARS, instead of the abbreviated TWENTY D. seen on the Type Two design. A moderate mintage of 397,670 Liberty double eagles was produced at the Philadelphia Mint that year, making the issue easy to locate in lower circulated grades, but quite elusive in Mint State.

The present coin is an attractive Select specimen, with well-detailed design elements and lightly marked orange-gold surfaces. Both sides radiate vibrant mint luster and the overall eye appeal is terrific. We expect intense competition from series specialists, first-year type collectors, and Registry Set enthusiasts when this lot is called. Population: 17 in 63 (1 in 63+), 1 finer (2/18).(Registry values: N2998)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26AY, PCGS# 8982, Greysheet# 9815)

Weight: 33.44 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
