Description
1787 Miller 31.2-r.3 Connecticut Copper, AU53
Conditionally Scarce Variety
1787 Connecticut, Draped Bust Left, M. 31.2-r.3, W-3210, R.1,
AU53 NGC. Obverse 31.2 is known only with reverse die r.3.
Reverse die r.3 is found only with obverse die 31.2. This die
marriage is arguably the most plentiful in the Connecticut series.
However, high-grade pieces are seldom encountered. Robert Martin's
coin, from the Norweb Collection, was graded XF45 and called
Condition Census. The Eric P. Newman MS61 Brown example is the
finest known to us. Mr. Newman had two other pieces that graded AU,
one double struck. The 1975 EAC sale, the Perkins Collection, and
the Ford Collection also had AU examples. A pleasing olive example
with dappled steel-brown toning and trivial marks. Somewhat blunt
on the reverse. Listed on page 66 of the 2021 Guide
Book.Ex: Jon Hanson (3/17/2001); Donald G. Partrick.
Coin Index Numbers: (Variety PCGS# 685385, Base PCGS# 370)
