31.2-r.3 is a plentiful variety in the Connecticut series, rated
URS-12 in the Whitman Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early
American Coins. There are 246 varieties in the 1787 Connecticut
copper series, including 18 that are rated URS-11 or URS-12 in the
Whitman encyclopedia, equivalent to R.1 or R.2 on the traditional
rarity scale. Those 18 varieties are the best choices for colonial
type collectors who seek a marriage of quality and affordability.
This piece from the Donald G. Partrick Collection certainly handles
the quality aspect with its smooth mahogany and olive-brown
surfaces that are free of circulation marks, displaying a nicely
centered strike with full legends and a bold date. This example
will most likely cover the affordability aspect of the equation as
well. Listed on page 66 of the 2021 Guide Book.Ex: Jon Hanson (2/20/1997); Donald G. Partrick.
