Description

1855-S Double Eagle, MS62
Few Examples Certified Any Finer

1855-S $20 MS62 PCGS. While readily available in circulated condition, the 1885-S quickly becomes scarce in middle to upper Mint State grades. Shipwreck discoveries have added a significantly to the Mint State population, the finest being at the MS66 level. Still, most of the shipwreck finds are far below that lofty grade. The origins of this MS62 survivor are unknown but given the issue's historical rarity in Mint State, one can argue that a seawater past is likely. The finely grained surfaces display a rose blush on lush orange-gold surfaces. Canary-yellow highlights glimmer when the coin rotates in light and Liberty's portrait is smooth and pleasing. Light abrasions exist to account for the assigned grade. Nonetheless, this lustrous orange-gold coin presents a smooth and pleasing appearance and the mint luster fills the eye. PCGS Population: 18 in 62 (2 in 62+), 10 finer (7/25).(Registry values: N4719)
