1935-S Peace Dollar, CAC'd MS66
Unlisted Extra Ray Variety

1935-S $1 MS66 PCGS. CAC. Unlisted Extra Ray Variety. An extra sun ray appears on the reverse behind the eagle's tailfeathers, pointing to the mintmark. VAMWorld records three Extra Ray varieties: VAM-3, VAM-4, and VAM-6. This piece is from a different obverse than VAM-3, and does not have VAM-4's doubling. The VAMWorld reference images for VAM-6 are far too fuzzy to be used for diagnostic comparison, but the mintmark of VAM-6 appears closer to the extra ray point than it is on the present coin, leading us to conclude that this is a new Extra Ray die pair discovery. The coin is in an early die state with myriad fine die lines throughout both sides that can be used for diagnostic comparison. The die lines that may be most discernible in photographs of coins are those along the reverse rim from the P in PEACE and around the tip of the tailfeathers -- they curve up and away from the rim, into the tailfeathers. On the obverse, a thin horizontal line connecting the tip of the 9's upper loop to the center of the longer curve of the same numeral may be discernible in most photographs. Alternatively, a diagonal die line through the stop between GOD and WE is also prominent enough to be visible in most photographs. The coin itself is brilliant and frosty, with strong cartwheel luster and a bold strike. Die variety aside, this is a spectacular 1935-S Peace dollar. PCGS reports only four coins finer for the date (12/25).(Registry values: N1793)
