MS66 1908 Half Eagle With Amazing Color
1908 $5 MS66 NGC. Mike Fuljenz writes of the 1908 Indian five in Indian Gold Coins of the 20th Century:"The natural coloration on 1908 Half Eagles is often a rich orange-gold hue but original pieces are also seen with a somewhat greenish color. It is easier to locate examples of this date with nice color than nearly any other Indian Head Half Eagle and this makes the 1908 a very popular coin with type collectors seeking a single high grade piece for their holdings."
This piece certainly bears out Fuljenz's thesis, boasting amazing color in shades of reddish-gold with bright accents of lilac over each side--both the high points as well as in the fields. The strike is quite sharp--just short of full--with rich mint luster and nicely frosted surfaces overall. NGC has certified only five finer, with one at PCGS (1/11).(Registry values: N7079)
