Description

1905 Double Eagle, PR64 Cameo
Rare in Proof Format
Few Cameo Examples Known

1905 $20 PR64 Cameo PCGS. CAC. The proof 1905 Liberty double eagle is rare in all grades. Its mintage of 92 pieces is similar to those of the 1904 and 1906 proof twenties (98 and 94 coins, respectively), but of the three, the 1905 is by far the rarest date. PCGS estimates only 40 to 45 pieces are extant, although we feel Garrett and Guth's estimate of as few as 30 to 40 coins is more in line with the frequency of auction appearances. Since the beginning of our auction archives in 1993, we have sold only 18 examples of this proof issue, including some reappearances of previously offered coins. There are two pieces in the Smithsonian Institution and a third is out of collectors' hands in the American Numismatic Association.

This Choice proof is in a small minority of pieces that boast a Cameo designation. Due to the die preparation process in use during the period 1902 to 1907, few examples of this issue were ever struck with distinctive field-device contrast. In all grades, PCGS lists only eight Cameos, including possible resubmissions. Of these, three are in PR64, and three are finer (7/15). Moreover, this piece is one of only two PR64 Cameos awarded CAC approval.

The eye appeal of this coin is outstanding, yielding stark field-motif contrast amid warm yellow-gold color. The devices are sharp and sufficiently frosted, while the fields showcase incredibly deep mirroring and are devoid of any obvious hairlines. The most recent Cameo example of this issue we have offered was in lot 4411 of our 2015 FUN Signature sale, where the Pittman PR63 Cameo example realized $25,850. This coin is far superior in terms of both technical quality and eye appeal. Fully worthy of a strong bid.(Registry values: P1)
