The Stickney-Eliasberg Example

1842 1/2 C Original PR64 Red and Brown NGC. B-1, R.6. The Braided Hair half cents were only coined in proof format from 1840 through 1848, and in 1852. Small Date 1849s were also coined in proof, and the 1849 Large Dates were struck in both proof and circulation strike format. The remaining years through 1857 were produced both ways, except for 1853 where no proofs are known. Originals were struck at the time of the coin date, while First and Second Restrikes appeared many years later.

With a provenance dating back to the 19th century, this piece has an important numismatic history. This Choice piece, one of about 18 surviving proofs, exhibits considerable orange mint color with dappled olive and dark brown. A lovely representative. Our EAC grade PR63. Census: 2 in 64 Red and Brown, 0 finer (3/16).
