1877-CC Trade Dollar, MS65
High Condition Census
1877-CC T$1 MS65 PCGS. A phenomenal Gem of this issue, with
thick mint luster throughout and a sharp strike on all the devices.
There is a hint of gold toning starting to settle into the
periphery, particularly on the reverse. The surfaces are especially
clean for the grade, and as we all know, the grading services don't
exactly give away Gem grades for a rare issue. In absolute terms,
this is perhaps the second or third finest known of the date, with
a single coin seen finer by PCGS, and one other MS65 graded by NGC
aside from the present example at the MS65 benchmark (11/18). The
fields and Liberty are attractive and close examination will find
minimal signs of contact. For identification purposes we note a
tiny horizontal nick on Liberty's outstretched arm near her elbow,
another is found very close to her arm in the field just above. On
the reverse there is a tiny nick below and right of the D, below
the E and U of UNITED.So what happened to the 534,000 Trade dollars coined at the Carson City Mint in 1877? Numismatic scholar Walter Breen stated that 44,148 pieces may have been melted in 1878 at the Carson City Mint in his Encyclopedia, but this number does not account for the general rarity of the date today. The combined NGC and PCGS Population Reports tally just over 400 1877-CC Trade dollars in all grades. Obviously, the vast majority of 1877-CC Trade dollars were cast back into melting pots, either here or in China, both, or somewhere else, as there simply are so few coins to represent this issue. In Gem grades as seen here, there are a total of three coins graded, making this one of the most difficult issues for a collector to find. For the astute connoisseur, obtaining the coin offered here will be a major coup, and will place any such collection in the history books. We anticipate bidding worthy of this great American rarity when it crosses the block.
