Description

Washington Born Cent, XF40
Inscribed Reverse, Baker-60

(1792) CENT Washington Born Virginia Cent, Inscribed Reverse, XF40 PCGS. Baker-60, W-10730, Musante GW-33, R.5. Formerly believed struck by the Westwood Mint in Birmingham, England, but research in recent years confirms that Jacob Perkins of Newburyport, Massachusetts was the maker, using the 1791 Westwood cents as a model. There are two die varieties of the Born Virginia, Inscribed Reverse. The first (GW-32) is extremely rare, and has the 1 in 1789 centered between the TE in UNITED. GW-33 is collectible, but rare in all grades, and usually found in VF. This mahogany-brown example is evenly struck, unlike most examples which show softly impressed reverse legends. Small marks are distributed and are inoffensive. Listed on page 84 of the 2020 Guide Book. Population: 2 in 40, 11 finer (7/19).
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2008), lot 2646; FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2010), lot 39, which realized $4,887.50.
