Description
1849 No L Gold Dollar, MS67
A Sharp, Condition Rarity Specimen
1849 G$1 No L MS67 NGC. While some writers estimate the
mintage of this first-issue gold dollar at around 1,000 circulation
strikes, David Bowers (2011) suggests that the number is 10,000 or
more. Whatever the original mintage, certified population data
indicate that the majority of extant specimens are in the Mint
State levels of preservation, which is not surprising as large
numbers were saved for their novelty as the first year of the new
denomination. While fairly easily located through near-Gem, Gems and Premium Gems are scarce, and higher-grade examples are rare. Heavily basined dies produced noticeable reflectivity on this Superb Gem piece, especially on the obverse. Bright yellow-gold surfaces display occasional flecks of red and lilac patina, yield great luster, and are devoid of any obvious defects. The design elements exhibit sharp definition. Census: 4 in 67, 2 finer (9/11).(Registry values: P4)
