1873 Trade Dollar in Silver, PR65 Cameo
Judd-1315, Bailly's Liberty

1873 T$1 Trade Dollar, Judd-1315, Pollock-1458, R.4, PR65 Cameo NGC. Bailly's Liberty design is seated left on the obverse with cotton bales, tobacco plants, and wheat sheaves around her. Her right (facing) hand supports a globe inscribed with LIBERTY while her left holds high a pileus cap. A small eagle atop a shield dominates the reverse with the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM above and 420 GRAINS, 900 FINE and TRADE DOLLAR below. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. Silver pieces were struck with reeded and plain edges, while copper and aluminum examples are reeded only, and there are two white metal pieces known (both plain edge). This is a beautiful, problem-free example that displays strong white-on-black cameo contrast on each side. Almost brilliant with just a touch of yellow patina on the obverse.
