Description
1842 Two and a Half, Choice XF
Fewer Than 60 Pieces Believed Known
1842 $2 1/2 XF45 PCGS. Only 2,823 quarter eagles were struck
at Philadelphia in 1842. As a Philadelphia issue, this date is
somewhat underrated. PCGS estimates that only 50 to 60 pieces are
extant in all grades, making it rarer than any of the branch mint
issues of this year. This is a collector-grade XF45 coin with good
detail and pleasing orange-gold patina. The surfaces are lightly
worn but attractive. A horizontal field mark above the fraction on
the reverse is the only mentionable imperfection. Population: 6 in
45, 13 finer (3/19).(Registry values: P2)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25GG, PCGS# 7723, Greysheet# 8263)
Weight: 4.18 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
