So-Called 'Small 8,' BD-6

1798 $5 Large Eagle, Small 8, BD-6, R.6, AU58 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/b, with a crack left of the O in OF. The Bass-Dannreuther reference on Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties refers to this variety as a Large Eagle, Normal 8, and goes on to explain: "It is not small, but the correct punch size -- it matches the other digits of the year." This example is boldly struck, if typically soft over the center of the reverse, with shimmering, semiprooflike fields and rich green-gold color. Several heavy vertical adjustment marks are noted across Liberty's portrait. Slightly worn with numerous wispy pinscratches and hairlines on each side. Census: 6 in 58, 5 finer (11/18).
