Six-Piece 1888 Gold Proof Set
Gold Dollar through Double Eagle
Complete Six-Piece 1888 Gold Proof Set. A carefully selected
set of the six proof gold issues of 1888, including late issues of
odd denominations such as the gold dollar and three dollar. Each
proof is of at least Select quality with gold coins exhibiting
Cameo or Deep Cameo contrast. This lot is the second of two lots
that contain all 13 proof denominations for 1888. The other lot is
in Wednesday's Platinum Night offering. The present lot
includes:Gold Dollar PR65 Cameo PCGS. Excellent detail and contrast with a touch of wateriness to the lemon-gold mirrors. The surface quality is solid, with only a pinpoint contact mark under the bust warranting individual mention. The holder-plastic over the reverse has several whitish scuffs that should not be taken as damage to the coin itself.
Liberty Head Quarter Eagle PR65 Cameo NGC. CAC. An attractive coin that shows contrast, not only between field and device textures, but interior and rim colors as well. The margins are butter-yellow, close to orange, while the rest of the coin is far paler with the exception of a couple of small coppery areas. Great quality and eye appeal. The listed mintage is just 97 proofs.
Three Dollar Gold PR65 Cameo NGC. Both sides have pale yellow-gold color and considerable contrast. The obverse offers a remarkably clean appearance, and while the reverse has a scattering of planchet flakes, these do not influence the technical grade, unlike a short line of contact marks above the RS in DOLLARS. A great display coin.
Liberty Head Half Eagle PR64 Cameo PCGS. CAC. Great black-and-gold contrast with the reverse virtually of Deep Cameo quality. A few small contact marks appear under Liberty's chin, but the reverse displays magnificently, and CAC confirms the accuracy of the technical grade. One of 95 proofs in the Mint records.
Liberty Head Eagle PR63 Deep Cameo PCGS. Though it might be the lowest-graded coin in the set, it is far from the least important, and this boldly contrasted coin with orange-kissed fields retains great majesty despite a line of scuffs to the left of the portrait. An apparent white spot over the middle of the eagle is in the plastic case, not on the coin. Mintage 75 proofs.
Liberty Head Double Eagle PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC. Strike, frost, and mirrors are all exquisite on this Gem. The fields are "black" at certain angles and the same pale gold as the devices at others. Flaws to the left of Liberty's chin and on her cheekbone contribute to the grade but have little effect on the eye appeal. Despite a mintage of 105 specimens, far fewer exist; Garrett and Guth suggest "only 20 to 30 coins known."
