1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim AU55 PCGS. The striding figure of Liberty on the High Relief twenty dollar gold piece is obviously based on the Nike of Samothrace at the top of the Grand Staircase in the Louvre. The Louvre describes the statue as:

"The goddess of Victory (Nike, in Greek) is shown in the form of a winged woman standing on the prow of a ship, braced against the strong wind blowing through her garments ... The highly theatrical presentation-combined with the goddess's monumentality, wide wingspan, and the vigor of her forward-thrusting body-reinforces the reality of the scene."

The translation from the Louvre's Nike to the figure seen on the double eagle was skillfully done by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. On this example, even with slight friction in the fields and over the high points, the "highly theatrical presentation" is fully evident. The wire rim is almost complete around each side, and there are only slight, shallow contact marks present.(Registry values: N2998)
