Description
1965 Dime on a 90% Silver Planchet
MS62, Rare Transitional Alloy Error
1965 10C Roosevelt Dime -- Struck on a Silver Dime Planchet --
MS62 PCGS. Facing a coin shortage and a rising price for
silver, the U.S. Mint switched to a clad composition in 1965. But
there remained a large inventory of silver dime planchets, which
were coined in due course, back-dated 1964. We have no auction
record of 1964 clad dimes, but several 90% silver 1965 dimes have
appeared in our actions, nearly always in AU grades. This is the
finest example of the transitional error that we have offered. The
lustrous and lightly toned surfaces resemble that of a typical
Uncirculated clad dime, except the edge lacks tell-tale red stripe
characteristic of the modern alloy. From The Poulos Family Collection, Part II.
