Unique 1879 Flowing Hair Stella Variety
Judd-1636a, PR60 Gilt
Ex: H.P. Smith, 1906

1879 $4 Flowing Hair Four Dollar, Judd-1636a Gilt, Pollock-1837, Unique(?), PR60 NGC. This is the apparently unique variant of the 1879 Flowing Hair stella. The design differences are listed and the coins depicted side-by-side on the USPatterns.com website. This design is described as, "with the point of Liberty's neck pointing to the '1' in the date and the pearl pointing to the first 7 is known by only a single gilt copper example and is listed by Pollock as J1636A/P1837. This obverse is probably the first die produced."
It is sometimes debated whether patterns were gilt in the Mint or outside. We know definitively that this piece was gilt outside the Mint as it was listed as a copper piece in the H.P. Smith Sale in 1906. Since that time it has been cleaned and three prominent milling marks are located on the neck of Liberty which identify the coin.
It is difficult to overstate the rarity and importance of this design variant. All stellas are rare and exceptionally popular coins. This piece goes one step further. The design elements are placed differently from a normal stella and provide the advanced collector a unique opportunity.
