Description
1866-S No Motto Twenty, AU50
Only 12,000 Pieces Estimated Struck
1866-S $20 No Motto AU50 PCGS. Small S. The No Motto variant
of the 1866-S twenty is the second rarest S-mint double eagle. Most
are VF to XF, and AU examples are seldom encountered. Only 175 to
200 pieces are believed extant in all grades. An estimated that
only 12,000 pieces were struck, all in February of 1866, from the
previous year's reverse that lacked the new motto. This is an
evenly worn example that displays faint outlines of mint luster
around the devices on each side. Numerous small abrasions are
peppered across both obverse and reverse, but none are worthy of
singular mention. Population: 16 in 50, 30 finer (11/18).(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 269W, PCGS# 8945, Greysheet# 9906)
